Today, there are 37 million low-income Americans (GAO Report: Poverty in America, 2007).  Here in the Chicago area, one out of every five residents is living in poverty (Heartland Alliance, 2006).  It is plain to see that financial hardships are not bound by city limits - poverty has also increased in every county surrounding Cook (Heartland Alliance, 2006: The Brookings Institution, 2006).   You need look no further than the daily news to understand that poverty is a persistent problem in our community.

Each year in the Chicago area, thousands of people seek financial help.  The majority of people we serve are low-income, often in transition, and typically living at or below the median financial resources of the community.  Without our assistance, many would be at-risk for homelessness.
